The Little Red Fox Espresso is proud to host ‘The Stilted Houses of Kampong Phluk‘, the latest collection from Channa Chhum.
Join us on the 17th of December from 6:00pm till 8:00pm to celebrate Channas latest collection after a 9 year hiatus.
“Channa was born in Battambang in 1986 and had the opportunity to study at Phare Ponleu Selpak and graduated in 2005 specialising in watercolour.
He had his first solo exhibition on almost-extinct traditional Khmer houses at ‘Reyum Institute of Arts and Culture’ in Phnom Penh. He has previously had many group exhibitions several years ago in Siem Reap at different venues, such as Hotel De La Paix (now known as the Park Hyatt). Now, for his latest collection he has chosen to paint the the floating village of Kampong Phluk and its houses on stilts.
Channa explains that back in 2003 while he was still studying at Phare Ponleu Selpak, he went to Prek Toal in the Battambang province and painted houses on stilts for the first time. He stresses he started painting them because he thought they were exceptionally beautiful. However, he decided to put his stilted house project on hold and opt to paint Khmer traditional wooden houses instead because they were more accessible.
Now he has found the time and courage—after a 9-year hiatus—to paint the stilted houses of Kampong Phluk and exhibit again. With this project, Channa hopes to show Khmer people and also visitors of Siem Reap. the livelihood of those living inside the floating village.”
